A Life of Devotion

John ibn Huwai was a Christian from Africa and a freed slave of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, a close companion of Prophet Muhammad. After Abu Dharr's death, John served the Ahlul Bayt, eventually becoming a devoted servant to Imam Husayn. He accompanied the Imam from Medina to Mecca, and then to the plains of Karbala.

Day of Ashura

On the Day of Ashura, despite his old age, John sought Imam Husayn's permission to fight. The Imam, showing great compassion, told John that he had followed them for peace and was free to leave. John wept and pleaded, "I have lived among you in times of ease; I will not leave you in this time of hardship. My blood is not noble, but let it mix with your noble blood." Deeply moved, the Imam granted him permission.

Martyrdom

John fought with incredible valor, slaying many enemy soldiers before attaining martyrdom. Imam Husayn rushed to his side, placed John's head on his lap, and prayed to Allah to illuminate John's face and sweeten his scent. It is reported that days after the battle, a sweet fragrance emanated from his body. Learn more about John's inspiring story on Al-Islam.org.
