The Arrival of Umar ibn Sa'd

On the 3rd of Muharram, Umar ibn Sa'd arrived at Karbala with an army of 4,000 soldiers. He was promised the governorship of Rayy by Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad in exchange for fighting Imam Hussain (a.s.). This day marked the beginning of a massive military build-up against the small caravan of the Prophet's grandson.

Imam's Negotiations

Despite the overwhelming forces, Imam Hussain (a.s.) sought to avoid bloodshed. He met with Umar ibn Sa'd and reminded him of his lineage and the consequences of shedding the blood of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.). However, worldly greed blinded Umar ibn Sa'd. (Source: Tarikh al-Tabari)

Significance

The 3rd of Muharram illustrates the stark contrast between those who sacrifice everything for truth (Imam Hussain) and those who sell their hereafter for temporary worldly gains (Umar ibn Sa'd). Majalis on this day often focus on the loyalty of the Imam's companions and the growing threat they faced.
