2nd Muharram — Imam Hussain Arrives at Karbala
- 2 Muharram 61 AH
Arrival at Karbala
On the 2nd of Muharram 61 AH, Imam Hussain's (a.s.) caravan reached the desolate plains of Karbala. When the Imam asked the name of the land and was told it was 'Karbala', he wept and said, 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from Karb (grief) and Bala (trials).' (Source: Luhuf by Sayyid Ibn Tawus).
Events of the Day
The Imam’s path was blocked by Hurr ibn Yazid al-Riyahi, a commander of Yazid’s army. The Imam purchased the land of Karbala from the people of Naynawa and Ghadhiriyya, setting the stage for the greatest sacrifice in Islamic history. He then set up his tents, ensuring the women and children were placed safely in the center.
Significance and Aamal
This day marks the physical beginning of the tragedy. Shia Muslims hold majalis (mourning gatherings) to recount the arrival. We commemorate the steadfastness of the Imam who knew this land would be the site of his martyrdom but remained resolute for the sake of Allah.
