Zuhayr ibn Sulaym al-Azdi

Background and Awakening

Zuhayr ibn Sulaym al-Azdi was a tribesman from the Azd tribe. It is important to distinguish him from the famous commander Zuhayr ibn al-Qayn. Initially, Zuhayr ibn Sulaym was part of the immense army dispatched from Kufa under the command of Umar ibn Sa'd. However, as the days progressed in Karbala, it became increasingly evident that the Umayyad forces had no intention of a peaceful resolution and were determined to slaughter the grandson of the Prophet.

Joining the Imam and Martyrdom

According to historical records like Ibsar al-'Ayn, on the night of Ashura (or early morning), Zuhayr defected from the Umayyad army. Guided by his conscience and faith, he crossed the battlefield under the cover of darkness to join the camp of Imam Husayn (a.s.). He repented and stood shoulder to shoulder with the Imam's loyal companions. On Ashura morning, during the massive first assault by enemy archers and cavalry, Zuhayr fought courageously and was martyred.
