Zargham al-Ta'i (r.a.)

Background and Identity

Zargham (also historically documented as Dhargham ibn Malik al-Taghlibi or al-Ta'i) was a loyal Shia of Kufa. Known for his unwavering allegiance to the household of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), Zargham was a brave warrior who pledged his life to defending truth and justice. While his tribal affiliation is sometimes debated between al-Ta'i and al-Taghlibi, his presence among the devoted defenders of Karbala is undisputed in Shia historical texts.

Role at Karbala

Zargham managed to slip out of Kufa, evading the heavy patrols set up by the Umayyad governor Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, to join Imam Husayn (a.s.) in Karbala before the battle commenced. He stood side by side with other prominent companions, enduring the agonizing thirst and the psychological warfare waged by Umar ibn Sa'd's army.

Martyrdom

On the 10th of Muharram (Ashura), when the Umayyad forces launched their devastating first attack involving a rain of thousands of arrows, Zargham stood like a shield for Imam Husayn's camp. He fought valiantly and ultimately achieved martyrdom, falling on the sacred sands of Karbala. His sacrifice is solemnly remembered in Shia litanies and historical records of the tragedy.
