Birth and Upbringing
Abbas ibn Ali was the son of Imam Ali (a.s.) and Fatima bint Hizam, famously known as Umm ul-Banin. He was born with immense physical strength, striking beauty, and deep piety, earning him the title "Moon of the Hashemites." From a young age, he was fiercely devoted to his older brothers, Imam Hasan and Imam Husayn, viewing them not just as siblings but as his divine leaders.
Role at Karbala
At Karbala, Abbas was the commander (Sipahsalar) and standard-bearer (Alamdar) of Imam Husayn's small army. Despite the overwhelming enemy forces, the mere sight of Abbas guarding the tents struck fear into the hearts of Yazid's soldiers. His unwavering loyalty was tested when the enemy offered him a safe conduct (Aman) due to a distant tribal relation with his mother, which he fiercely rejected, choosing to die with Imam Husayn.
Martyrdom
On the day of Ashura, after days of agonizing thirst in the camp, the cries of the children became unbearable. Abbas sought permission from Imam Husayn to fetch water. Armed only with a water skin and a spear, he charged toward the Euphrates River, single-handedly scattering the enemy guards. He filled the water skin but, out of immense loyalty, refused to drink even a drop while his master remained thirsty. On his way back, the enemy ambushed him from behind trees. First, his right arm was severed, then his left. Holding the water skin with his teeth, he continued forward until an arrow pierced the skin, spilling the water, and another struck his eye. Finally, a severe blow from a mace to his head brought him down from his horse. Imam Husayn rushed to his side, weeping bitterly, declaring, "Now my back is broken and my options are lost."

জন্ম ও বেড়ে ওঠা
আব্বাস ইবনে আলী ছিলেন ইমাম আলী (আ.) এবং ফাতিমা বিনতে হিজামের (যিনি উম্মুল বানিন নামে বেশি পরিচিত) পুত্র। তিনি অপরিসীম শারীরিক শক্তি, অসাধারণ সৌন্দর্য এবং গভীর তাকওয়া নিয়ে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন, যা তাকে "হাশেমিদের চাঁদ" উপাধি এনে দেয়। ছোটবেলা থেকেই তিনি তাঁর বড় ভাই ইমাম হাসান এবং ইমাম হুসাইনের প্রতি গভীরভাবে অনুগত ছিলেন এবং তাদের কেবল ভাই হিসেবে নয়, বরং তাঁর আধ্যাত্মিক নেতা হিসেবে দেখতেন।
কারবালায় ভূমিকা
কারবালায়, আব্বাস ছিলেন ইমাম হুসাইনের ক্ষুদ্র বাহিনীর সেনাপতি (সিপাহসালার) এবং পতাকাবাহী (আলমদার)। বিপুল সংখ্যক শত্রু সেনার উপস্থিতি সত্ত্বেও, আব্বাসকে তাঁবু পাহারা দিতে দেখে ইয়াজিদের সৈন্যদের মনে ভীতি সঞ্চার হতো। শত্রুরা যখন তাঁর মায়ের দিকের দূরবর্তী গোত্রীয় সম্পর্কের কারণে তাকে নিরাপত্তা (আমান) দেওয়ার প্রস্তাব দেয়, তখন তাঁর অবিচল আনুগত্যের পরীক্ষা হয়। তিনি সেই প্রস্তাব তীব্রভাবে প্রত্যাখ্যান করে ইমাম হুসাইনের সাথে মৃত্যুবরণ করাকেই বেছে নেন।
শাহাদাত
আশুরার দিন, শিবিরে চরম তৃষ্ণার কারণে শিশুদের কান্না অসহনীয় হয়ে ওঠে। আব্বাস ইমাম হুসাইনের কাছে পানি আনার অনুমতি চান। কেবল একটি পানির মশক এবং বর্শা নিয়ে তিনি ফোরাত নদীর দিকে ছুটে যান এবং একাই শত্রুদের ছিন্নভিন্ন করে দেন। তিনি মশকটি পানিতে পূর্ণ করেন কিন্তু গভীর আনুগত্যের কারণে, তাঁর নেতা তৃষ্ণার্ত থাকা অবস্থায় এক ফোঁটা পানিও পান করতে অস্বীকৃতি জানান। ফেরার পথে শত্রুরা গাছের আড়াল থেকে তাকে অতর্কিত আক্রমণ করে। প্রথমে তাঁর ডান হাত, তারপর বাম হাত কেটে ফেলা হয়। দাঁত দিয়ে মশক ধরে তিনি এগিয়ে যেতে থাকেন, কিন্তু একটি তীর মশকে বিদ্ধ হয়ে পানি পড়ে যায় এবং আরেকটি তীর তাঁর চোখে আঘাত করে। পরিশেষে, মাথায় গদার এক প্রবল আঘাতে তিনি ঘোড়া থেকে পড়ে যান। ইমাম হুসাইন কাঁদতে কাঁদতে তাঁর কাছে ছুটে যান এবং বলেন, "এখন আমার কোমর ভেঙে গেছে এবং আমার উপায় শেষ হয়ে গেছে।"
