Background and Status in Kufa
Ziyad ibn Amr, famously known as Abu Thumama al-Sa'idi (r.a.), was a leading figure among the Shia in Kufa. He was a veteran warrior who had fought alongside Amir al-Mu'minin Imam Ali (A.S) in all of his battles. Renowned for his deep knowledge, piety, and bravery, Abu Thumama was responsible for collecting funds and organizing the acquisition of weapons for Muslim ibn Aqil during the initial uprising in Kufa.
Joining the Imam
Following the suppression of Muslim ibn Aqil's movement and the imposition of a severe crackdown by Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, Abu Thumama was fiercely hunted. He managed to escape Kufa alongside Nafi' ibn Hilal, traveling secretly until they joined Imam Husayn (A.S) on his route to Karbala.
The Dhuhr Prayer on Ashura
Abu Thumama is immortalized in Islamic history for his profound devotion to prayer. Amidst the intense and bloody battle on the Day of Ashura, as the time for Dhuhr prayer approached, he looked at the sun and turned to Imam Husayn (A.S), saying: "O Aba Abdillah! My life be sacrificed for you! I see that these people are coming closer to you. By Allah, you will not be killed until I am killed defending you, but I wish to meet my Lord having prayed this prayer whose time has arrived."
Imam Husayn (A.S) looked up at the sky and replied, "You have remembered the prayer; may Allah make you among those who establish prayer and remember Him. Indeed, it is the beginning of its time." The Imam then asked the enemies for a brief cessation of hostilities to pray. When they refused, Abu Thumama and a few others stood as human shields while the Imam offered the Salat al-Khawf (Prayer of Fear).
Martyrdom
After the prayer, Abu Thumama sought permission to enter the battlefield. He fought valiantly, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy army. He was eventually struck down by a man who was his own cousin but harbored deep enmity towards the Ahl al-Bayt. Abu Thumama achieved the lofty status of martyrdom, fulfilling his pledge to his Imam. His story is heavily cited in Lohoof (Sorrows of Karbala) and other primary Maqtal sources.

ইমামের সাথে যোগদান
মুসলিম ইবনে আকিলের আন্দোলন দমন এবং উবায়দুল্লাহ ইবনে জিয়াদের তীব্র অভিযানের পর, আবু সুমামাকে হন্যে হয়ে খোঁজা হচ্ছিল। তিনি নাফি ইবনে হিলালের সাথে কুফা থেকে পালিয়ে যেতে সক্ষম হন এবং কারবালার পথে ইমাম হোসাইন (আ.) এর সাথে যোগ না দেওয়া পর্যন্ত গোপনে ভ্রমণ করেন।
আশুরার দিন যোহরের নামাজ
আবু সুমামা নামাজের প্রতি তাঁর গভীর ভক্তির জন্য ইসলামী ইতিহাসে অমর হয়ে আছেন। আশুরার দিন তীব্র ও রক্তক্ষয়ী যুদ্ধের মাঝে, যখন যোহরের নামাজের সময় ঘনিয়ে আসে, তিনি সূর্যের দিকে তাকান এবং ইমাম হোসাইন (আ.) এর দিকে ফিরে বলেন: "হে আবা আবদিল্লাহ! আমার জীবন আপনার জন্য উৎসর্গ হোক! আমি দেখতে পাচ্ছি যে এই লোকেরা আপনার আরও কাছাকাছি আসছে। আল্লাহর কসম, আপনাকে হত্যা করা হবে না যতক্ষণ না আমি আপনাকে রক্ষা করতে গিয়ে নিহত হই, তবে আমি চাই এই নামাজ আদায় করে আমার প্রভুর সাথে মিলিত হতে, যার সময় এসে গেছে।"
ইমাম হোসাইন (আ.) আকাশের দিকে তাকিয়ে উত্তর দিলেন, "তুমি নামাজের কথা স্মরণ করেছো; আল্লাহ তোমাকে তাদের অন্তর্ভুক্ত করুন যারা নামাজ কায়েম করে এবং তাঁকে স্মরণ করে। সত্যিই, এটি নামাজের সময়ের শুরু।" এরপর ইমাম শত্রুদের কাছে নামাজ পড়ার জন্য যুদ্ধ সাময়িক বিরতির অনুরোধ করেন। তারা প্রত্যাখ্যান করলে, আবু সুমামা এবং আরও কয়েকজন মানব ঢাল হিসেবে দাঁড়িয়েছিলেন যখন ইমাম সালাতুল খওফ (ভয়ের নামাজ) আদায় করেন।
শাহাদাত
নামাজের পর, আবু সুমামা যুদ্ধক্ষেত্রে প্রবেশের অনুমতি চান। তিনি বীরত্বের সাথে লড়াই করেন এবং শত্রু বাহিনীর ব্যাপক ক্ষয়ক্ষতি করেন। অবশেষে তিনি এমন এক ব্যক্তির দ্বারা আঘাতপ্রাপ্ত হন যে ছিল তার নিজের চাচাতো ভাই, কিন্তু আহলে বাইতের প্রতি গভীর শত্রুতা পোষণ করত। আবু সুমামা তাঁর ইমামের প্রতি প্রতিশ্রুতি পূরণ করে শাহাদাতের সুউচ্চ মর্যাদা লাভ করেন। তাঁর গল্প লুহুফ (কারবালার দুঃখ) এবং অন্যান্য প্রাথমিক মাকতাল সূত্রে ব্যাপকভাবে উদ্ধৃত হয়েছে।
