Mawla of Amir ibn Muslim, Companion of Imam Husayn

A liberated slave from Basra who accompanied his master, Amir ibn Muslim al-Abdi, to join Imam Husayn and was martyred with him at Karbala.

Born
Basra, Iraq
Died
61 AH / 680 CE
Cause of death
Martyred in the first attack on Ashura.

Salim (r.a.) was the liberated slave (mawla) of Amir ibn Muslim al-Abdi. Originating from Basra, both Salim and his former master were deeply devoted to the Ahl al-Bayt. When they learned of Imam Husayn’s journey, they traveled from Basra to Mecca and joined the Imam's caravan heading towards Karbala.

On the day of Ashura, Salim stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Amir ibn Muslim in defense of Imam Husayn (a.s.). According to historical accounts, both master and servant fought bravely and were martyred during the fierce first attack of the Umayyad army. Salim's sacrifice is a profound example of how love for the Prophet's household transcended social status, and his name is honored in the Ziyarat of the martyrs.
