Arrival in Medina

Maria al-Qibtiyya was an Egyptian Coptic Christian sent as an honorable gift to the Prophet (PBUH) by Al-Muqawqis, the ruler of Egypt. She embraced Islam with a pure heart upon arriving in Medina. She was known for her exceptional beauty, grace, and tranquil demeanor, which endeared her deeply to the Prophet.

Mother of Ibrahim

She holds a profoundly unique status as the only woman, other than Lady Khadija, to bear the Prophet a child. She gave birth to a son, Ibrahim, bringing immense joy to the Prophet's later years. Tragically, Ibrahim passed away in infancy, an event that brought the Prophet to tears, demonstrating that feeling sorrow is completely aligned with submission to God.

Her Status in Shia Islam

There is robust theological discussion regarding her exact title. While originally arriving as a bondswoman, many Shia and Sunni scholars argue that the Prophet freed her and formally married her, elevating her to the full status of Umm al-Mu'minin. Regardless of the technicalities of the title, she is remembered with profound love and respect by the Shia for her piety, her modesty, and the heartbreak she shared with the Prophet.
