The Prisoner of Baghdad

The tyrannical Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid imprisoned Imam al-Kadhim (a.s.) for years in various dungeons. The Imam's only companion was his prayer mat, where he would prostrate for hours, thanking Allah for providing him the time to worship without worldly distractions. (Source: Tarikh al-Baghdad)

His Martyrdom

Unable to break the Imam's spirit, Harun ordered his jailer, Sindi ibn Shahak, to poison the Imam through poisoned dates. He achieved martyrdom on the 25th of Rajab 183 AH. His body was initially left on the bridge of Baghdad in an attempt to humiliate him, but the people gathered in massive numbers to honor him. He is buried in Kadhimiya, Iraq.

The 25th of Rajab is a day of profound mourning. Shia Muslims visit his holy shrine in Kadhimiya, recite his Ziyarat, and hold majalis to mourn the 'Gharib' (lonely) Imam who died in chains.
