The Supreme Sacrifice

On the 10th of Muharram 61 AH (Ashura), the tragedy of Karbala reached its climax. Imam Hussain (a.s.), despite being thirsty for three days, fought bravely against an army of thousands. One by one, his devoted companions and beloved family members, including his 18-year-old son Ali Akbar, his brother Abbas, and his 6-month-old infant Ali Asghar, were brutally martyred. Finally, the Imam himself was killed and beheaded by Shimr. (Source: Luhuf)

Significance in Shia Islam

Ashura is the most somber day in the Islamic calendar. Imam Hussain's (a.s.) sacrifice saved Islam from being distorted by the Umayyad dynasty. It stands as the ultimate symbol of justice, truth, and resistance against tyranny. 'Every day is Ashura, and every land is Karbala.'

Aamal of Ashura

On the Day of Ashura, it is recommended to refrain from worldly activities and spend the day in mourning and grief. Reciting Ziyarat Ashura and Ziyarat Nahiya Muqaddasa is highly emphasized. Giving charity, shedding tears for the martyrs, and reciting the tragic events (Maqtal) are central to the day's observances.
